Eden Project
Visit the Eden Project, Cornwall and discover a rainforest in captivity
Eden Project
The Eden Project is the greatest eco attraction in the world. Learning about the world of plants and their role in our lives has never been so enthralling. Eden is about reminding us of our reliance on plants. Organic matter cures, clothes, feeds and produces the air we breathe. As we become aware of our environment, we understand how important it is to human survival. Making the travel experience, an adventure in learning something worthwhile is essential.
Back in the 1990s, The Eden Project's site was a colossal hole in the ground, the remnants of a china clay pit. Tim Smit helped restore the Lost Gardens of Heligan and had an idea to create a theatre of plants, a place to pay homage to life. Over a few years, people met in various pubs to discuss this crazy plan to build vast biomes and house exotic plants. It was such an exciting project to be a part of that companies took the risk and invested free time and labour.
Make the Eden Project part of your guided tour of Cornwall. We feel that the Eden Project should be part of every itinerary that heads into the South West of England. The Eden Project features in our England’s South Coast Tour, and The Family Experience of Cornwall. Our travel designers will tailor any suggested itinerary to your match your specific requirements.

The Rainforest Biome
The Biomes at the Eden Project are the largest conservatories in the world. They are marvellous pieces of engineering, and guess what? The inspiration for the design comes from the natural world, like most of the best creative solutions.
The rainforest biome roof is made of incredibly light, super-strong inflated pillows. The translucent pad allows UV light but insulates against the unpredictable British weather. The average annual temperature in a tropical rainforest is 25c, humidity at 90%, and rainfall can be 1,500 mm or 60 inches. That environment is replicated here in Cornwall, allowing you to walk through the world's rainforests.
Discover the Plants from tropical Islands, Malaysia, West Africa, and South America. Learn about biodiversity loss; deforestation provides farmland, timber, and space to grow palm oil in many food products. Take a stroll on the canopy walkway 50 meters up amongst the treetops. It is thirsty work trekking through the rainforest, stopping for a tropical baobab (the tree of life) or fruit smoothie.
The Mediterranean Biome (warm temperate climate zone)
The Mediterranean biome is hot and dry, with plants evolving to have silvery, petite and hairy leaves, unlike the deep green of the tropical plants, enabling the gathering of UV light. Mediterranean plants manage the strength of UV light from cloudless skies with a reflective surface.
Areas of the world with this climate are between 30-40 North or South latitude on the western side of landmasses. Much of our fruit, vines, and olive oils come from this region. Irrigation and fertilizer help produce high-yielding crops.
The warm temperate zone of South Africa is home to rare flowering plants, an area of half a per cent of Africa. Still, it has 20% of the continent's flora. See some of the rare endangered species on your tour.
Food
The Eden Project has excellent healthy choices for lunch. Try the Med Café and watch the food growing around you. You could have fresh pizza and burritos at the Canopy Café or a treat at the Ice Cream parlour; remember, this is Cornwall (famous for ice cream and dairy products). All food at the Eden Project is of a high standard. The Eden Project played a role in the G-Seven meeting In June 2021. Leaders worldwide enjoyed a tour and evening meal with live music inside one of the biomes'.
Adrenaline Activities at Eden; ZIP Wire, Giant Wings, Air-Bag Jump and Base Jump
Fly 100 meters above the biomes on England's longest Zip Wire. Base Jump from a platform and feel the rush of air before being controlled by the descender rope. Fly at 50 mph on a Giant Swing over a cliff. Do you have the courage for a 12-metre Air-Bag Jump, find out on a Family Tour of Cornwall.
Touring and accommodation
Cornwall is great for multi-generation family groups because there is a variety of things to do. Let us help you create the itinerary that is perfect for you. Our suggested Family Experience of Cornwall is a start. We have created a coastal tour; England's South Coast Tour. Our tour-designers will help create your driver-guided tour of England trouble-free.
Cornwall is full of unusual gardens, dramatic coastlines, pretty fishing villages and world-class beaches. Exotic plants at Trebah Gardens survive in the mild climate of the southwest. Trebah is a subtropical oasis that tumbles down a ravine and eventually ends up on a pristine beach – pure magic. Cotehele House and Gardens is a very different place with terraced gardens encircling an old Cornish house.
Visit the lively artist colony of St Ives or escape to St Michael's Mount; for the more adventurous, try Surfing in Cornwall or Kite Surfing. Animal lovers may wish to Snorkel with Grey Seals in the Scilly Isles.
Stay at Hotel Tresanton in the heart of St Mawes, a pretty fishing village on the south coast. There is a wide choice of accommodation in the UK; Cottages, Manor House Hotels and traditional Guest Houses. Alternatively, stay at the luxury boutique hotel The Idle Rocks with an award-winning restaurant.
If this is your first time to England, we would recommend a custom version of our Town and Country Tour; it covers the famous places and allows you to utilise your private driver-guide by getting-off-the-beaten-path. Our Classic tour of Ireland is a good place to start for the first trip to Ireland, and we suggest the Classic tour of Scotland for your first trip to the bonny Highlands.
