Ely Cathedral
Discover Ely Cathedral, a small historic city tucked away in the Fen countryside
Ely Cathedral
Discover Ely Cathedral, an architecturally beautiful yet underrated place that is worth visiting on your Private Tour of England with a personal guide. Tucked away in the Fen countryside, this was once a remote island. Now surrounded by flat countryside, the magnificent cathedral will surely catch your eye.
People worldwide visit Ely Cathedral to marvel at its imposing and intricate structure, with the lantern being a mathematical masterpiece, rising above the roof like a crown. Another must-see aspect is the spectacular painted timber ceiling in the nave of the cathedral. Take the opportunity to visit Oliver Cromwell’s former residence and see what life was like in the 17th century.
The city was the last stronghold of the Anglo-Saxon resistance under Hereward the Wake. He exploited the natural defences of Ely to try and resist the Norman invasion of 1066, under William the Conqueror. Unfortunately for Hereward, the Normans invaded the island and overwhelmed his forces. Ely became the second richest monastery in England. The construction of the Cathedral was the method used by the invading Normans to display their power over the local population.
Visit this hidden gem on your Private Tour of England whilst enjoying a luxurious stay at the University Arms in Cambridge, where you can explore this beautiful university city. If you have an interest in aircraft, then the Duxford Aircraft Museum is a must-visit.
