Murder, mayhem and ‘Jack the Ripper’
Immediately east of the City of London lies the district associated with the working classes and manufacturing, simply known as the East End. In the 19th century extreme poverty and appalling living conditions made the area a notorious hotbed of crime and vice.
Whitechapel was terrorised by a series of brutal attacks on women, many of which were fatal. These notorious murders are known as the Whitechapel Murders.
